Internet of Things as Theory of Media and Information
1. Search for the meaning of the INTERNET OF THINGS and answer the following questions:
a) In your own words, define Internet of Things
- Internet of things (IoT) is a computing concept that describes the idea of everyday physical objects being connected to the internet and being able to identify themselves to other devices. Simply put, this is the concept of basically connecting any device with an on and off switch to the Internet (and/or to each other).
b) What brought this theory about?
- As of 2016, the vision of the Internet of things has evolved due to a convergence of multiple technologies, including ubiquitous wireless communication, real-time analytics, machine learning, commodity sensors, and embedded systems. This means that the traditional fields of embedded systems, wireless sensor networks, control systems, automation (including home and building automation), and others all contribute to enabling the Internet of thing
- The concept of the Internet of things became popular in 1999, through the Auto-ID Center at MIT and related market-analysis publications. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) was seen by Kevin Ashton (one of the founders of the original Auto-ID Center) as a prerequisite for the Internet of things at that point.
c) Do you like the concept of IoT ?
Why or why not?
- In my own understanding, I have a 50-50 opinion whether I like the concept of IoT or not. I cannot fully say that I like its concept because Internet of Things invades the privacy of a person since all the things that we do online is connected with anything. On the other hand, I can say that I like its concept because it helps us lessen our stress and effort in doing activities, especially on the internet.
d) In what situations do you encounter IoT in
the Philippines?
- I have already experienced the concept of IoT, and in that experience, I can say that it is very helpful. For instance, transportation vehicles, nowadays, especially grab and uber cars, can now be hired through the use of smart devices. Once we are connected in the Internet, we can already access a lot of websites which can be helpful in our daily lives.
e) How do you think IoT will
evolve and affect Filipino society in the next 3 to 5 years?
- Given the fact that we are already in the phase where innovations and new technologies are invented everywhere, I think that in the next 3 to 5 years, our country, the Philippines will hopefully have a faster and wider connection to the internet. If this will become a reality, all our activities will be made easier and we can also build a better social relationship with our fellowmen due to the high speed of internet that we can be used for communication.
f) What do you think is the relationship /
cause and effect of IoT in
media and information literacy?
- Media and information literacy refers to an individual's ability to access information, free expression and education. Nowadays, one of the most helpful and fastest way to access information is through the internet. Since the concept of IoT talks about things being interconnected, I can conclude that we can easily gather more information from the people around the world which can be applied in different aspects of life.
