Internet of Things as Theory of Media and Information
1. Search
for the meaning of the INTERNET OF THINGS and answer the following questions:
a) In your own words, define Internet of Things
Internet of things (IoT) is a computing concept that describes the idea of everyday physical objects being connected to the internet and being able to identify themselves to other devices. Simply put, this is the concept of basically connecting any device with an on and off switch to the Internet (and/or to each other).
b) What brought this theory about?
As of 2016, the vision of the Internet of things has evolved
due to a convergence of multiple technologies, including ubiquitous wireless
communication, real-time analytics, machine learning, commodity sensors, and
embedded systems. This means that the traditional fields of embedded
systems, wireless sensor networks, control systems, automation (including home
and building automation), and others all contribute to enabling the Internet of
thing
The concept of the Internet of things became popular in 1999,
through the Auto-ID Center at MIT and related market-analysis publications. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) was seen by Kevin Ashton (one of the
founders of the original Auto-ID Center) as a prerequisite for the Internet of
things at that point.
c) Do you like the concept of IoT ?
Why or why not?
In my own understanding, I have a 50-50 opinion whether I like the concept of IoT or not. I cannot fully say that I like its concept because Internet of Things invades the privacy of a person since all the things that we do online is connected with anything. On the other hand, I can say that I like its concept because it helps us lessen our stress and effort in doing activities, especially on the internet.
d) In what situations do you encounter IoT in
the Philippines?
I have already experienced the concept of IoT, and in that
experience, I can say that it is very helpful. For instance, transportation
vehicles, nowadays, especially grab and uber cars, can now be hired through the
use of smart devices. Once we are connected
in the Internet, we can already access a lot of websites which can be helpful
in our daily lives.
e) How do you think IoT will
evolve and affect Filipino society in the next 3 to 5 years?
Given the fact that we are already in the phase where innovations and new technologies are invented everywhere, I think that in the next 3 to 5 years, our country, the Philippines will hopefully have a faster and wider connection to the internet. If this will become a reality, all our activities will be made easier and we can also build a better social relationship with our fellowmen due to the high speed of internet that we can be used for communication.
f) What do you think is the relationship /
cause and effect of IoT in
media and information literacy?
Media and information literacy refers to an individual's
ability to access information, free expression and education. Nowadays, one of
the most helpful and fastest way to access information is through the internet.
Since the concept of IoT talks about things being interconnected, I can
conclude that we can easily gather more information from the people around the
world which can be applied in different aspects of life.

Given the available media that we now have
in the world,
what are its roles and functions in a democratic
society?
In our generation today, we are lucky enough to have been given different available media that helps us communicate with the people around us and be updated with all the current events that are happening around the world. The fact that we are living in a democratic society, it means that the power is invested in us and we are the ones who freely choose our desired leaders. Due do this, all the available media that we have today have a very big role and functions in our society. Its first role is to act as the channel. It provides opportunities for people to communicate, share ideas, speculate, tell stories and give information. Second, it performs as a watchdog which exposes corrupt practices of the government and the private sector. As what I have said earlier, in this kind of society, we have the power to elect our desired leader, and through the help of the media, we can guarantee that there is a free and fair election. Third, it acts as a resource center. Today, there are a lot of existing platforms wherein we can share our thoughts, opinions, and ideas online, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and a lot more. These things help the members of the society to have a stronger social relationship with each other. Lastly, media also advocates. It bridges the gap of digital divide, which means that the people who lacks information about technology can also relate with the so-called “millennials”.
Media plays a very big and important role in my life, especially as a student. Since we are already in the Information Age, all the pieces of information that we need to know in school, society, and even in our house can be found with just one
click with the help of the Internet. Because of this, I can say that the most important role of media in my life is to help me in all my activities related with school. Through the help of the media, I can also communicate with my relatives, friends, classmates and even meet new friends which help me build a stronger social relationship with them. I can also say that media affects my personal life since I frequently use the web as my online dictionary wherein I privately post my thoughts about certain topics and bring out my emotions when I have no one to talk to. Overall, I can say that media really affects my whole well-being, especially in areas such as academics, social, and personal.
My intended audience are the Millennials, most
especially the Senior High School Students.
Speaker
/ Author
(Who is the producer?)
I am the producer of my own article and it will
be posted through the help of the Candy Magazine team.
Purpose
(What is the purpose?)
My purpose on making an article about the responsible use of media is to promote awareness and mindfulness among the ones who regularly use different social media, which are the millennials.
Key
Content
(What is the topic?)
The topic of my article is all about the
responsible and proper use of different social media.
What are the facts?
To make my article accurate enough for the readers, I will present a statistical data which states or presents the rate of irresponsible users on our generation today together with some screenshots of posts, comments, pictures, statuses, tweets, and other evidences which shows reckless use of social media by the millennials.
Form / Style
(How can I present this information?)
·I will consider posting it as a visual blog
since most of the teenagers in our generation today use the social media habitually.
How would this affect my
audience?
·By using a visual blog, my article would be more
effective and entertaining since there are pictures posted along with the
texts. Through my article, the millennials will be enlightened and encouraged
to be more responsible and mindful of their actions
Medium / Format
(What platform will I use? Why?)
·I will use an online blogging site like the
Candy Magazine. Candy Magazine is the website of the Philippines number one teen
magazine; it is every high school students’ online best friend. I chose to post
my article on this site or through this medium because it is where teenagers
usually spend their time reading articles about love, friendships, school, and
life in general.
In a week, I spend approximately 42 hours talking with my friends and scrolling through my Facebook account that's why I can conclude that I have spent most of my time in this website. Ranking in the second place is Twitter and the third one is YouTube.
2.What roles does the media play in your lives? (leisure learning, communication, etc.)
Media, as a whole, has been a very essential part of my life, especially as a student. For me, media serves as one of my favorite thing to do during my past time or leisure time. Through media, I get to be updated with all the happenings around the world - including the national news, world news, sports news, showbiz news, and even updates on the lives of my friends and relatives. Media also helped me a lot in communicating with the people around me, and by communicating I am also able to learn from the conversations that I had with the ones I have talked to by exchanging ideas and information. Like for example, I regularly use my Facebook account to communicate with my classmates to ask whether we have school works that must be submitted on the next day. By this way, I don't only get the chance to communicate with them, but I have also gathered and learned new information from them. Therefore, I can conclude that in my life, media plays a big role in entertainment, leisure, learning, and communication.
3. Define Media and Information Literacy.
Media and Information Literacy (MIL), defined as the ability to access, analyze, and create media, is a prerequisite for citizens to realize their rights to freedom of information and expression. It deals with the deep human need to communicate in a
complex world that does not offer equal opportunities for

Misconceptions
on Information Literacy
If the site looks like a professional web designer built it, then the
information
is probably reliable.
At first, I thought that Information Literacy is gathering and
accessing
information using different available platforms.
Initially, I also thought that Information Literacy is an ability
which
helps an individual to understand and reflect on the
information found on different media.
Misconceptions
on Media Literacy
Initially, I thought that Media literacy is only all about
the proper
use of different media platforms, but when we tackled it,
I found out that it has a deeper meaning compared to
my first idea.
Misconceptions
on Technology Literacy
Before discussing its actual meaning, I first thought that
Technology
Literacy is all about the benefits and advantages one can
get
with the help of different media through available
technologies.
Misconceptions
on Media and Information Literacy
At first, I really have no idea on what Media and
Information
Literacy is all actually about. I just assumed that it
tackles
an individual’s ability to use the internet to communicate
and
gather information.
1.In your opinion what makes an individual literate in media
and information?
As I have read some information on the internet, on my own understanding, I can say that an individual may be considered literate in media and information if they can properly understand and make their own opinions and decisions wisely based on the media or information they use. They are able to effectively evaluate sources, create new knowledge in order to publish and collaborate responsibly which requires ethical, cultural and social understanding. One may also be considered literate if he or she is able to engage in a digital society, where he or she analyzes, thinks critically, understands very carefully, and creates intelligent decisions or statements based on what he or she have read or seen. In conclusion, to be considered as a literate person today means more than being able to read and write. In a world diverse with cultures, print texts, media, and technologies, a literate person needs to possess certain specific capabilities.
2. What activities or habits
do you practice which illustrates
Media and Information literacy?
One of the things which I really give importance to is trust and credibility, and in order to gain and maintain one’s trust, all the information that I would tell them must be 100% true and reliable. Young as I am today, I always make sure that everything that I post, say, share, and comment must be accurate. Before sharing a news article or even a blog post, I will read, analyze, and understand it first very carefully before clicking the go button. Another habit that I practice is understanding whole-heatedly the answers or information for my home works and researches that I would get from the internet. I do not believe immediately in everything that I see online, except if the site is an official one and if it’s really reliable. I also make sure that the accurate pieces of information that I have gathered online must be properly applied in my daily works. Last but not the least, I regularly communicate with my friends and relatives online, through Facebook. Since I have the ability to access this site, I make sure that I use it properly and responsibly. I must be responsible of all the actions that I will make
